The article states that scientists do not know what exactly caused the elimination of many specied in a short period of time at the end of Triassic period and provides three possible explanations. However, the professor explains that even though these theories may seem plausible but they are not good enough to explain mass extinction and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that decline in sea levels destroyed the ocean population that lived in the shallow-ocean and land species that liced on the coast. The professor opposes this point by saying that scientists agree that sea levels had fluctuated in the end of Triassic period and often its levels went down but it is not a good explanation for mass extinction. These creatures had the ability to adopt to environmental change that happened gradually. She states that the changes in sea levels was gradual and it had taken several milion years to occur. She set forth the fact that in order to extinct those species, the change in sea levels should be really sudden.
Second, the author posits that climate cooling which was the result of volcanic activity that released sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere was another theory to explain mass extinction. Nevertheless, the professor contends that existence of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere can lower the temperatur. But it happens in a short period of time when sulfur dioxide is still exist in the atmosphere. According to the professor, in few years all the sulfur dioxcide would be cleared out. She explaines that this element would combine with water that exist in the atmosphere and comes down with the rain. Thus, it is not a good explanation.
Third, the article avers that striking an astroid caused the sunlight blocked and it cuased the plants to die and as a result the anumal species to starve and die. The professor refutes this point by stating that few scientists believe that hitting an astroid caused the mass extinction because there is no evidence of astroid's creter the date that mass extinction occured. Based on the lecture, the scientists found evidence of an astroid that striked to Earth about twelve years before that time which was too long before the mass extiction to do anything with it.
