Standardized Testing
The Article discusses a fascinating topic pertaining to benefits for students by Standardized testing system and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that this system is not beneficial for all the students in the society and opposes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading passage discusses that the test is standardized state-wide and nationwide and also it puts pressure on students to study well in order to go ahead in next higher grade. In contrast, the professor provides information that due to standardization same material is used by teachers for all the students and he adds up stating that trained instructors are not having any rights to modify the study material based on the liking, capability and unique learning style of students. Clearly a disparity exists between the article and the evidence exhibited by the professor. As a result, we can safely assume that all the students are not benefited by the standardized testing method.
Second, the article pushes forth the idea that because of this standardized testing method, federal government can do comparison of different schools and reward the best performing school along with providing help to schools with weak students. However, the classroom discussion contends that by this the best performing school gets more fund and weaker will not get any benefits. According to professor, the rough neighbourhood and environment where students live is hurdle for the students to study well, so government should consider that and try to solve that issue along with providing economical aide to the needy schools. Consequently, we can argue that indeed the claim made in reading is unsubstantiated and students suffer more because of standardisation.
Finally, the reading posits that because of comparison of different schools based on standardised test performance that weak students will be helped and will get assistance to move forward by learning. The professor refutes this point by explaining that weak students who do not pass the tests, need to stay back in the same class and they will not get any help. Professor talks about students who are ill and not capable for performing good in exams are at loss because of standardised testing system. We learn from this that clever students can also achieve success.
In summary, while both the reading passage and classroom discussion provide interesting information with regards to standardized tests and its effect on students, a significant amount of evidence supports that all the students will not get equal amount of benefit from standardized test. Therefore, the reading passage fails to justify the claim towards standardized tests.
