The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The graph compares the amount of water used globally by sectors in km2 from 1900 to 2000 and the table illustrates the differences in water consumption between Brazil and Congo in 2000.
Overall, there is an obviously upward trend in the global use of water for agriculture, industry and domestic in the one-hundred-year period, starting from 1900. In addition, it can be clearly seen that in 2000, Brazilians consumed a huge more quantity of water compared to citizens of Congo.
In 1900, people worldwide barely used water for domestic and industrial purposes as the figure for them was about one-tenth compared with that for agriculture, which was 500km2 relatively. After 100 years, the proportion of water used for three categories all went up remarkably. The patterns for cultivating reached its highest peak, which was 3000km2 while that for domestic use increased much more slowly, which was five time as much as its figure in 1900. Meanwhile, the figure for industrial grew to about 1200km2.
In 2000, the number of people in Brazil was 176 million, which is nearly thirty-four times as many as the population of Congo, which was only 5.2 million. The amount of water consumed per person in Brazil was 359m2, which was much higher than that of Congo, which was at 8m2, and this might be because of the fact that Brazil had 265 times more irrigated land compared with that of Congo.
