Both the author and the lecturer discuss the superiority of electronic databases to paper-based information for recording medical information. The author believes that electronic databases are more reliable and they overweight paper-based record keeping. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She believes that reasons given by the author are illegal.
As for the first reason, the author mentions that electronic records can reduce costs of saving information. It is mentioned that paper databases need lots of space and finding a proper place to store them may cost a lot, while electronic records do not need any space. The lecturer, on the other hand mentions that doctors who use electronic databases, use papers too, and they keep papers as an emergency record. Therefore, a space to keep papers is still needed and not only this would not decrease the costs, but also may increase it.
Secondly, the author believes that by using electronic databases, errors relating to awful handwriting, improper materials of the paper or these kinds of things will be diminished. The lecturer casts doubt on this claim. She mentions that while checking patients, doctors use pen and paper to take notes and an office staff will convert this information to an electronic database later. Therefore, there is a chance to have mistakes and errors.
Finally, the author states that electronic databases help researches because they are easier to be accessed from any place. The lecturer rebuts this claim. She suggests that there are some strict rules for accessing this data and patients can block their information and prevent others to see them. Consequently, doctors may need to go through very strict laws and permissions, even from the patient, to get the information they need.
