The reading and the lecture argue about the purpose of carved stone which is found in Scotland and dated around 4000 years ago. The writer of the reading states three explanation of the use of those stone balls. The professor, on the other hand, refutes all of the explanations provides in the passage. He states that none of the purposes which is claimed in the reading are convincing.
First of all, author of the reading claims that those stone balls were used as weapons in the Neolithic period since some balls surface had some holes and grooves. However, the lecturer disagrees with this point and argues that in the Neolithic period, people usually traced some war signs in their weapons. But there was no war sign in those balls which is found different locations in Scotland. As a result, this balls might not use as an instrument of hunting and fighting.
Secondly, the second states that stone balls were being used as the standard of scale. The author assumes this purpose because most of the ball's shapes were almost same. The professor disapproves this point by saying that unlike their similar shape, their weights were not exactly same. He also posits that those stone were made from different kind of stone which had various density. As a result, the weight of stone balls was varied. So those stone could not have the properties of being a part of weighting system.
Finally, the author contends that Carved stone balls were kept as an indication of social rank. He postulates this because of the elaborate designs of their surface. The audio section rebuts this. The professor claims that there was no such great design had on the surface of the ball. He furthermore says that Neolithic period people had the specific ranked sign which was absent in those balls. As a result, stone balls might not an individual personal status object.
