Based on the given set of reading material, it is the aithor's belief that it's not likely that the vessels, which had been discovered in Iraq, were used as electric batteries in ancient times. and he provided three reasons to substanciate this claim. That being said, the lecturer holds an opposing view and gives several reasons for it that are as follows:
Initially, the writer drew attention to the fact that the vessels were not attached to some conductors such as metal wires. However, the lecturer is quite doubtful about the validity of this idea. As she poits out that the discoverers of these vessels were not archaeologists and were not trained for this job. So the metal wires or some kind of other conductors could have been located in the area but the excavators could have miss the material.
Another point that was raised in the reading was that the cylinders inside the jars look exactly like the ones discoverd in Seleucia, which were used for holding scrolls of sacred texts. So probably the jars were used for holding scrolls as well. Conversely, the lecturer rejects this one too by asserting that there is no evidence for author's claim. These jars could have been used for the same purpose but then some ancient inventor discovered another usage for them by adding some liquid to the vessels, which contained the copper cylinder and the iron rod.
As the last point to support the given claim in the reading, the author put emphasis on the point that these ancient people didn't need batteries because they didn't had any devise for using them. Yet again, the lecturer deems this idea invalid as well. She continues by stating that there is as possibility that they used these batteries for medical purposes. She illustrates that they could also use them for convincing others that they have some kind of magical powers by the sensation of shocking that the batteries could emerge.
