The main idea of both the reading passage and the lecture is about stricter regulations for using and storing coal ash. The reading passage provides three reasons of support. On the other hand, the professor rejects whatever mentioned in the passage.
First, the reading passage discusses that environmental regulations already exist. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this point and states that current regulations are not adequate. New regulations must provide for new company along with the old one in this field because their disposal of coal ash cause pollution the drinking water.
Second, the reading passage demonstrates that new regulations may discourage the recycling of coal ash. On the other hand, the professor rejects this point and gives us an example of Mercury. She states that Mercury is also a hazard material for environment and there are some regulations for its uses but Mercury’s consumers do not have any concerns about the regulations.
Eventually, the reading passage claims that new regulations will result in a substantial increase of costs for the power companies. But the professor is against this point and states that the cost for power will increases only one percent and it definitely worth to save our environment and to avoid the environmental pollution.
All in all, the reading passage provides three reasons against the stricter regulations for using and storing coal ash. On the other hand, the professor thinks that none of these is reasonable.
