Reading specifies that there are three reasons to suspect story of the burning mirraor witch greeks were used to deffend their city. However, the professor explains that it is not impossible and inconvincing and refutes each of author's reasons.
First, the reading states that the ancient greek were not enough developed in technology to make a divice which could focus sunlighe on ship to initiate fire. Nevertheles, the ancient greek have the material and could use many piece of mirror to form a large wide mirror.
Second, based on the reading, the burning mirror would have taken a long time to set ships on fire and also the ships were moving. In contrast, the experiment that explain in the reading was done on a wood and it last 10 minute for wood to catch a fire but we know that there was othere material on roman ships like pitch which used to water proof their ships. Therefore, we experiment that way on this material and it took only a few second for wood to get fired and after that it does not matter ships were moving, the fire spread immediately.
Third, according to the reading, the ancient greek did not need an improvement on theii flaming arrows weapons . Greeks need to use a new way instead of flaming arrows because roman were familiar with this method. Furthermore, they tried to find much more effective and surprising to start fire on the roman's ships.
Therefore, the spificis points mentioned in the reading make sense.
