The lecturer presents some disadvantages, that both employers and employees would face, if a policy that allows the latter ones to work four days a week instead five, would be enforced. He says that the arguments stated in the passage are far away from being accurate, when compared with reality.
First, the company will be confronted with visible profit loss. This is due to the fact that employees are not able to cover the work they used to do before. Furthermore, hiring new staff does not resolve the issue, since this implies providing professional training for the new personnel. In addition, the company must pay more medical assurances, allocate new office spaces and buy electronic devices. This directly contradicts what the article indicates when referring to profitability.
Second, such a schedule affects personal life, because the employers have the expectations that present employees have to fulfill the same amount of task as beforehand. If they cannot achieve this goal, it is expected to do overwork. Therefore, this conducts to overburdened and overloaded mental states, perturbing the family environment. This counter-argument shows that theories enunciated in the passage, are far away from being applicable.
Third, this category of workers are also professionally affected in long run. In other words, their chances of building a strong and successful career lessens considerably or worse, they are more likely to confront with job instability. It is common accepted that people advancing in their career are those who prove to be hard-working and whom availability of work is higher superior comparing to the others.
