In general, despite the downward trend showed in the number of men smoking, this figure was always higher than the number of women who smoked in the timescale of 40 years. Moreover, the rates of male smokers showed a gradual downward trend, whereas the rates of female smokers climbed higher in this period
In 1960, the rates of male smokers were 600. This was far higher than the rates of female smokers, which were just under 100. However, it then declined gradually throughout 1960 and 2000 and finished at around 250.
In contrast, apart from a steadiness at just under 200 between 1965 and 1970, the number of women who smoked grew significantly until it reached a peak at just above 300 in the period of 1975 and 1980. Then the rates of female smokers witnessed a gradual decrease, which finished at 200 in 2000, a double rise compared to the level where it began.
