workweek change
The reading and the lecture are both about whether decision of reducing employee working duration from 5 days per week to 4 days per week is rational or not. The reading says that this change will increase chances of giving smoother life to employee, increase employment rate and will provide company cost benefit. However, the professor casts doubt on all the three points made in the reading.
First of all, the author of the reading states that lesser work week will reduce work pressure upon employee, and a relaxed and happy employee will make less mistakes in his job. He also notes that, this will give chance to company hire more employee, as the amount saved by reducing work week can be used in hiring process of new employee. Nevertheless, the lecturer doubts this point. He posits that hiring more employee will enhance cost, as the new recruits need tarining and more space and a computer to work, which could be avoided by not changing the work week.
Secondly, the text contends that cahnge in work week will increase the employment rate. This point is rebutted by the professor. He claims that as the company's cost will increase by recuriting more employee. Therefore, to save cost comapny will force their existing employee to complete same work in 4 days as they used to do in 5 days, thus it will not help in creating new job and will make the employee overworked for reduced salary.
Finally, the article states that this new trend of reducing work week will give employee chance to spend more time with family and indulge in his private interset or hobbies. This point is challenged by the professor. He says that this change will increase employment risk and decrease job security. With this, when economical crisis will happen the company will prefer to retain those employee who works 5 days per week and fire those who does for 4 days per week and similar biasness will be observed in scenario of getting promotion.
