The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand our coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs."
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The business manager of a television station suggest that television station should expand their coverage of weather and local news to address the problem. Still, readers need further proof to verify the argument provided by the manager.
The memo suggested that most of the complaint received from viewers were concerned with the coverage of weather and local news. However, there’s no more information about what the complaint is. Maybe, the viewers is complained about not sufficient national news. In this case, it is not appropriate to increase the local news. Or it is perhaps that viewers thinks it is more convenient to search weather information online and there’s no need any weather report in the television. Furthermore, even if the complaint is about the lack of the coverage of weather and local news, we need more analysis about the preference between “weather and local news” and “nationals news” is needed. Although, it seems that now everyone has issue about the dearth of weather and local news. However, it might be possible that once we reduce the amount of national news in order to cater to those complaining the lack of weather and local news , it might raise bigger problem for now those preferring nationals news is really unsatisfied with the new distribution content in late-night news. Hence, the statistics needs to be given in order to evaluate the issue properly.
The manager also suggests that local business used to advertise during late-night news program have cancelled the advertising contract. However, what the manager neglect is that he didn’t know what is the exact reason for local business to cancel the contract. There might not be any relationship between the local news and local business. Broadcasting local news doesn’t mean that it will definitely improve the local business .If there’s some some negative things such as the robbery and assassination happened in the local , it will prevent the tourist from visiting there. Even if the news is surely helping in improving local business, it may be possible that the lack of revenue from the business is the reason that makes the company decides to quit the contract.
To strengthen the argument, the manager would have to provide sufficient evidence as above mentioned,
