The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry, or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition

Governments, Industries, sport teams, social groups, be it any organization; its success is largely dependant on the leader. As such, inculcating leadership qualities is the need of an hour for the society. Competition and cooperation are two vital attributes of a able leader.

Competition, is one of the surest way for progress. Any child right from his school days is taught to compete in academics, sports or be any field. Competition ensures a steady development in the society. It inculcates the ability for individuals to put in maximum efforts. On analyzing a simple issue, say a college test. As the test is based on ranking systems each individual will attempt to maximize his rank. Thus, will inevitably put in maximum efforts to strive it. Hard work is the key to success. To maximize his marks, the student will plan out stratigies, he will give practice tests to perfect his time management, rigorously solve questions to improve his accuracy. Following all the above will instigate leadership qualities in the student, and unknowingly a future leader of a nation, company or any organization is being groomed. This is only one example where competition has helped to improve the leadership qualities. In our daily lives, we can see number of situations where competition has proved beneficial for mankind. Just a walk on street and checking a couple of grocery stores in the vicinity we can see the two shops competing to serve better to its customers to maximize there own profits. Of course the shop owners or managers have developed many skills to make their shop the best. They have observed what products are trending, which product will maximize profits, which products are not yielding. All this is again developing leadership qualities. Thus, we can safely conclude a healthy competition among entities results in able leaders.

However, to what extent is competition healthy? In the examples discussed above, of a class test and of the grocery shops extreme competition could well lead to deletrious effects. If a child is not able to maximize his marks even after all the the hard work, his obsessiveness could lead him to cause other students harm. There could be fights among students as one is not able to perform as good as the other. The high level of competition could force a child to cheat and secure high grades in the exam. The grocery shop manager or owner could possibly start decrying the other shop or worse, break in and wreck the shop. Extreme results may rise due to competition

Hence, society should also inculcate the qualities of cooperation in the youth. They must be taught the value of a healthy competition. They must be taught to do better by improving their own abilities and not by belittling the abilities of others. Cooperation could well prove to be a key factor in developing leadership qualities. Afterall, no organization will strive without it's leaders being cooperative. We can thus conclude that cooperation and competition go hand in hand and are not two virtues to be treated independently.
