“Focus on Excellence, Success will follow”, focusing on success will take us closer to becoming avarice while focusing on excellence will get us where we want to be. The claim suggests that students should base their choice of a field of study on the basis of the availability of the jobs in that field, in my opinion, doing so will not only be forceful to the students but also could prove to be lummox in the longer run, to elaborate my point here are following few reasons why I believe so.
Firstly, there is no certainty that if the availability of the jobs is prevalent today they will be the same in the following years. In the 1900s there was a booming culture and a need for nuclear scientists across the globe, which resulted in many students to pursue nuclear science which had a high paying job, and eventually, when the market was saturated there was no need for further recruitment and due to availability of labors the salaries were also reduced, and today there is probably few companies hiring nuclear scientists. Thus availability of the jobs do not ensure that in future they will be available too and hence, students should not lure into the field of study based on the availability of jobs in that field.
Secondly, students should focus on their abilities and their interests in their respective fields rather than looking for high-paying salaries in some other field in which they are not interested in. The need for focus on excellence is much needed rather than focusing on achieving high-paying jobs. According to research done in 1973, it was proved that people who love their job were more productive in their work rather than the people who just did it for the sake of doing it. Thus, students should focus on their abilities and try improving them rather than looking for jobs that will be eventually saturated at some point.
However, if students focus on getting jobs that have high availability ratio they might be successful, but does success mean to achieve a job that pays much more or the job in which we work happily? If the students believe the latter then focusing on excellence will be much more cerebral rather than gaining ephemeral success. Thus, in my opinion, college students should not base their choice of feild of study on the availability of the jobs in that field but rather focus on their interests.
