Progress should be the aim of any great society. People too often cling unnecessarily to obsolete ways of thinking and acting because of both a high comfort level and a fear of the unknown.
These days, thanks to development technologies societies can communicate with each other and consider the main measure of progressing for being a great society. Being a great society is the goal of any community so fear of the unknown and reluctance to break from comfort zone is a very simplistic view. This approach does not take into account the set of economic, political, and cultural constraints that affect every society’s ability to progress on a global scale.
Before investigating the constraints, it would be useful to define a great society and answer to this question that what are the main features of great society? It is obvious that any society has its own definition about great society and considers certain measures to reach its goal. Some society pay attention to military and try to devote their budget on equip their army with the best weapon while others equate greatness with reinforcing the political relationship and spend their budget on this goal. Many societies prefer to progress in economical purpose while another emphasize on cultural achievement. In general, a great society is a society that pays attention to all important aspects which are including: economic, political and cultural purpose. Moreover, greatness can only come when a society’s basic structure is intact.
Societies have several important problems in their economic would not be able to progress in the other areas like medicine, justice ,and agriculture even if they want to do so. Developing countries that lay on their oil export like Iraq and other Middle East countries use the majority of their limited source for their current expenditures. People from these countries intend to have a great society but their chaotic economy and other main challenging like war do not allow them to focus to the other aspects of having great community.
Also societies have domestic wars and have political challenges could not provide their people who live there, with the opportunity to use basic society’s need like having the safety and security. Countries like Egypt, Syria, and some South African countries that have political problems and domestic wars have to devote their budget on buying weapons instead of paying attention to basic structure of great society. Furthermore, young people who live there have to make an effort to keep their family safe and fight against each other instead of going university or workplace. Having a great society at these kinds of countries is far from people’s minds.
The other point of view is society’s cultural history that cannot be overlooked easily. Some Arab countries that have rich and traditional political men at their zenith of their society could not be used up to date technology because of keeping safe their traditional cultures. People, who lived there, induce to practice their own traditional culture in different facet of their lives instead of using technology which one of the main points of having great society. When people cannot keep themselves up to date and use different kinds of inventions little by little get away from great society.
In conclusion, although being a great society is a very important goal for any society, some drawbacks can influence on this goal for a long time. It cannot to say, reaching to this goal is impossible, because countries can make a balance between accepting their society’s constraints and its strengths which will eventually lead to a society’s greatness.
