the graph below gives information about consumption of energy in the UK since 1990 with the projection until 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph shows energy consumption in the UK from 1990 to 2000 and projected consumption to 2020.
Petrol and oil are the dominant fuel sources throughout this period, with 50 quadrillion (50q) units used in 1990, rising to 55 q in 2000. Despite some initial fluctuation, from 1995 there was a steady increase. This is expected to continue reaching 60q in the 2020.
Consumption of energy derived from natural gas and coal is similar over the period. From 30q to 20q respectively in 1990, gas showed an initial fall and coal a gradual increase, with the two fuels equal between 1990 and 1995. Consumption has fluctuated since 1995 but both now provide 38q. Coal is predicted to increase steadily to 39q in 2020, whereas after 2015, gas will remain stable at 30q.
In 1990, energy from nuclear, hydro-and solar/wind power was equal at only 6q. Nuclear has risen by 4q, and solar/wind by 3q. After slight increases, hydropower has fallen back to the 1990 figure. It is expected to maintain this level until 2020, while the others should rise slightly after 2015.
Overall, the UK will continue to rely on fossil fuels, with sustainable and nuclear energy sources remaining relatively insignificant.
