The amount of commodities which are transferred by four modes of transportation in the UK during 1974 and 2002 are shown in the below graph.
To begin with, the staple of goods transported by road in all years between 1974 and 2002. Although the quantities of goods transported by road, water, and pipeline grow, rail keeps its share and 40 million tonnes of goods transported by it in 1974 and 2002 as well. 70 million tonnes of commodities transported by road in 1974, and none of modes reach this amount during the period. Road experiences a great increase in the amount of goods transported by it between 1995 and 1999 from less than 80 million tonnes to around 97.
In addition, goods transported by water considerably grow from 40 million tonnes in 1978 to around 57 million tonnes in 1982. Afterwards, they gradually rise to just below 60 million tonnes in 1992; by contrast, they gradually decline and reach 54 million tonnes in 1999. Then, they go up again and reach their peak of around 65 million tonnes in 2002; however, rail transportation's share decreases most of the time and reaches its nadir of around 30 in 1995.
Finally, although the amount of goods transported by pipelines increase most of the time, it has the lowest amount in all years. It stands at about just 5 million in 1974 and increases to a bit more than 20 million tonnes in 1995, when it reaches a plateau.
