The table illustrates the changes about the average distance travelled annually per person by different modes in England between 1985 and 2000.
Basically, from 1985 to 2000, the total travel distance increased from 4,740 to 6,475 miles, contributing mainly from car which jumped from 3,199 to 4,806 miles. Long distance bus, train, taxi and other modes also experienced increasing trend, although the increased amounts were much smaller than the mode of car.
By contrast, the table shows decreasing trend for modes of walking, bicycle and local bus. Local bus faced the biggest drop among these three modes from 429 to 274 miles, while the drops from walking and bicycle were not significant which were both less than 20 miles annually.
In summary, people in England travelled longer in 2000 than 1985. The majority of increase is from the mode of transports like car, long distance bus, taxi and others.
