The bar chart below gives information about the percentage of the population living in urban areas in the world and in different continents.
The given bar chart compares the proportion of the population in urban areas in six different parts of the world in 1950, 2007 and the projection for 2030.
Overall, all the given regions have witnessed a global upward trend in city population over the years. The figure has been remarkably higher in North America while the figures for Asia and Africa have accounted for the lowest.
Initially in 1950, the percentage for urban population reached over 50% in three of six given regions, which are Europe, North America and Oceania (51%, 64% and 62% respectively), closely followed by Latin America/Caribbean's (42%) while only 15-17% Asian and African lived in cities. After 57 years, the figure for people lived in cities rose to more than 70% in four of six regions, including Oceania. The lowest percentage in 2007 was recorded in Africa, at 37% while this percentage was slightly higher in Asia, at 41%.
It is projected that more than 60% of the population in given parts of the world would live in urban areas in the following 43 years. The proportion of city-dwellers is planned to be highest in North America, closely followed by Latin America/Caribbean, Europe and Oceania (90%, 89%, 84% and 76% in turn). Finally, Africa and Asia are expected to share nearly similar data in 2050, which is 62% and 66% respectively.
