The bar chart below shows the percentage of people living alone in 5 different age groups in the US from 1850 to 2000.
The bar chart illustrates the proportions of US citizens with different ages living alone during a 150-year period from 1850 to 2000.
It is clear from the graph that there was a significant rising trend of people living without partners in the US during the surveyed period. Additionally, the figure of people aged 55-64 was by far the highest among those age groups.
In 1850, the percentages were recorded for only three age groups. In particular, there were only 2% of US residents lived alone for both groups aged 37-46 and 47-54 while the group of aged people was marginally higher, at roughly 3%. After 50 years, in 1900, the figure for 37-46 years olds group remained stable, by contrast, the other two groups experienced an slight increase. Moreover, people from 27 to 36 years old started to live separately with just over 2% in total.
In 1950, just under 2% of people aged 17-26 living alone, and the remaining groups rose gradually. All the figures continued to grow in 2000 until reaching to approximately 17% in 55-64 years old group. In comparison, that figure was nearly four times higher than the youngest group (about 5%) and almost doubled the group of 37-46 years old.
