The graph illustrates information given by United Nations about the fertility and mortality rate of Swiss people over the 1970-2020 period. All the statistics are measured in millions.

In general, the number of newborn children was much higher than that of deaths in most of the given years except for 1980. Additionally, it is predicted that in 2020, the birth rate will be three times as high as the mortality one.

Another point is that there was a slight fluctuation in the number of deaths. In 1970, the figure of deaths was approximately one million before reaching a peak of 1.5 million in 1990. However, the fatality rate is projected to follow a downward trend and sink to a new low at 0.8 million in 2020.

In contrast, the newborn rate witnessed a sharp increase over a 40-year span starting from 1970. Having flattened off at a level of 1.2 million between 1970 and 1980, the birth rate showed a marginal rise in the later period and is expected to reach a new peak of 3.2 million in 2020.
