The chart below gives information about the most common sports played in NZ in 2002.
The chart represents the proportion of New Zealand students played nine different types of sports by its gender in 2002.
Overall, the sports participation rates in each gender seem equal but the preference of sports shows differently. While girls preferred playing for netball and swimming, boys preferred to play soccer and other sports. It is apparent that, the least popular sports for both gender was athletics.
A quarter of girls have played netball in New Zealand which were the highest participation rates, followed by swimming of about 22%. The rest of sports had about 5% to 10% of participation rates from girls except for cricket, athletics and martial arts. There was the least girls played for those three sports as which rates were about 1%, around 4% and 3% respectively.
Meanwhile, the boys' preference is completely opposed from girls' preferences. Close to a quarter of boys played soccer, followed by 17% of boys played other sports and swimming had interested by 13% of boys. The least popular sports were netball and athletics which proportion was about 1% and 3% respectively.
