The chart below shows the amount of leisure time enjoyed by men and women of different employment status.
The chart compares male and female employees from five different types of jobs in terms of the hours they spend weekly in their leisure between 1988 and 1989.
Overall, it is clear that male employees enjoyed more free time than their female counterparts. Moreover, there were no males working at home or doing any part-time jobs.
As the graph shows, unemployed males had the highest opportunity to spend their time in leisure and the figure is approximately 85 hours in a week. Regarding retired persons, they spent almost the same amount of time as unemployed citizens. Conversely, employed males enjoyed only 50 hours of free time in each week.
By contrast, females, regardless of their job status, got fewer hours of spare time compared with their male counterparts. It is evident from the graph that unemployed and retired women were given only 78 hours of leisure time weekly, whereas a housewife could manage more than 50 hours of free time. However, a full-time female worker had only about 40 hours in each week for refreshments and, for part-time female workers, it was just a little bit more than 40 hours in a seven day period.
