The chart below shows the amount of time that 10 to 15-year-olds spend chatting on the Internet and playing on games consoles on an average school day in the UK.
The bar chart compares the time spent by 10 to 15-year-olds in the UK on two activities, namely chatting online and playing computer games.
It is clear that playing computer games is marginally more popular than chatting on the Internet. However, different trends can be seen when we look at specific figures for boys and girls.
The boys aged 10 to 15 in the UK favored playing their game consoles over chatting online. Around 85% boys do this activity when the figure for chatting on the Internet is only 55%. Whereas most of boys spend more than one hour every day to play games, only 30% have online conversations daily. Notably, there are nearly 10% of boys playing computer games for four hours or more.
By contrast, the girls prefer chatting on the Internet. Nearly 70% of girls spent time on chatting online, the figure for playing games consoles was just over 50%. While most of girls used more than one hour to chat every day, the amount of time that they spent on gaming was overall less than one hour. Finally, the proportion of girls spent more than 4 hours on chatting online was nearly 10%.
