The chart illustrates how many individuals from four different nations pursued tertiary education in Europe between 2004 and 2008.
Overall, there was an increase in the number of international students coming from Japan and the USA, whereas those of Russia remained unchanged and a significant decline was seen in the figures for China. In addition, Chinese applicants generally accounted for the largest portion among the 4 countries examined during the former half period, but American ones overtook it from 2006 onwards. The number of Russian students consistently had the lowest data throughout the time frame.
The number of Chinese applicants started at nearly 30000 pupils, registering the highest position among the 4 countries, after which it experienced a steady decline to approximately 15000 people in 2008. Opposite changes can be seen in the figure for students coming from the USA, rising from 13000 applicants and surpassing the figure for China in 2006 before ending the period at the highest portion with 28000 individuals.
North of 5000 Japanese students chose European universities in 2004, with a gradual increase to 10000 individuals after 4 years. Meanwhile, the figure for Russian alumni leveled off negligible at around 2500 people and consistently remained at the lowest level between 2004 and 2008.
