The column chart illustrates differences in the proportion of home ownership and occupants renting housing in England and Wales from 1981 to 2011.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the proportion of accommodation owned by households, while the opposite was true for that of renting place of residence over the period shown. It is also noticeable that the figures for both categories were equally represented in the year 1971.
At the beginning of the period, the percentage of houses owned by families was just one – third of the figure for people rented houses, which was nearly 25 per cent. However, the gap appeared to be narrowed over a period of 53 years until 1971, the proportion of households renting and owing accommodation coincided, at exactly 50%.
Since then, the figure for home ownership experienced a gradual increase, in comparison with a moderate decline in the proportion of residents renting houses from 1981 to 2001. Despite a slight fall of approximately 5%, the rate of households owned accommodation was still higher than that of occupants renting dwellings, which only made up relatively 35% at the end of the period
