The figure above illustrates the percentage of household possessing and renting accomodation in both England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
In general, the proportion of people possessing and renting their current home had changed dramatically over the given period.
In 1918, while the proportion of households in rented accommodation was at the highest point of around 78% which is just tripled comparing to those genuinely owning their home (approximately 22%). However, the trend had altered significantly as the number of households in rented accommodation kept decreasing and the other kept rising to the point that they equally contributed 50% to the proportion in 1971.
As we can see from the figure, the percentage of households possessing their home gradually increases to its peak at just below 70% in 2001 before decreasing by 5% by the end of given period. The opposite tendency can be seen in the case of those in rented their home as the statistic also turn around by increasing 5 percent after bottoming out at just above 30% in 2001
