The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart demonstrates the proportion of households that are owned and rented in accommodation in two countries including England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
As we can see from the chart, over the first half of the period, the percentage of households in rented accommodation was higher than that figure in owned accommodation. However, over the second half, the number of houses owned was higher than the number of houses rented. It is a noticeable point that in 1971, both kinds of households were at the same level.
In 1918, the percentage of the households in rented accommodation reached the highest level, while that of households in owned accommodation hit the lowest point, at over 85% and nearly 25% in turn. Between 1918 to 1971, the proportion of families which rented houses dramatically dropped to 50%, whereas the figure for owned houses considerably went up at the same level as the percentage of households in rented accommodation.
From 1971 to 2001, the percentage of families which owned houses dramatically climbed to nearly 70%, while there was a rapid fall in the proportion of families which rented houses to just over 30% in the same period. However, over the final ten years of the period given, the percentage of houses owned slightly dropped to 65%, while that of houses rented modestly increased to 35%.
