The chart illustrates the percentage of houses owned and rented in England and Wales starting from 1918 to 2011. Overall, Rented houses were the top at the beginning of the period, while the owned houses increased to overcome the rented houses at the end of the period.
Firstly, renting houses were more common than buying them, about 76% of the houses were rented in 1918. This figure started to decrease until it reached around 68% in 1939 through 1953. After that, it experienced a steady reduction to almost 30% by 2001. Thereafter it showed a mild increase to reach 35% by 2011 which still higher than the percentage of owned houses at the beginning of the period.
In the other hand, people’s behavior toward houses started to shift toward ownership mindset, the figure was about 24% it experienced an exponential until it the year 2001 when almost 70% of houses were owned by their inhabitants. This followed by a 5% reduction in 2011.
