Overall, the unemployment rate had a decreasing trend in the 1988-2008 period. Although the number of people leaving Ireland had a sharp decrease in the 1988-2002 period, the figure had a strong growth from 2002 to 2008.
The proportion of unemployed citizens increased to nearly 15% in 1992 after a decreasing trend from nearly 17% at the starting point to 11% in 1990 . However, the unemployment rate rapidly dropped to 5% in 2000 and increase slightly to 6% during the 2000-2008 period.
After fluctuations in the 1988 – 2002 period, the number of residents who left Ireland was approximately 25000 in 2002, compared to around 60000 at the starting point in 1988. In contrast, people in Ireland witnessed a rapid increasing trend of the number of people leaving the country to around 50000 in 2008.
