The chart shows the percentage of Irish language speaker in five provinces in five years.
Given is the line graph illustrating changes in the proportion of people who can speak Irish in five regions from 1981 to 2002. In general, all provinces witnessed an upward trend during this period. Besides, while Munster and Connacht were places with the biggest number of speakers, Leinster had the smallest one.
With regards to Munster and Connacht, these areas respectively had about 35% and 40% of Irish speakers in 1981. While there were minute rises from 1981 to 1991 (1-2%), a considerable growth of approximately 10% was recorded after five years. Nevertheless, little changes could be seen from 1996 to 2002.
As mentioned above, Leinster was the province with the fewest inhabitants using Irish, continuously 10% lower that the highest figures. Even though the region had a fall in 1986, the quantity went up in 1986 and similar to other provinces, it surged to more than 35% in the next 10 years and remained constant after that.
