The given bar chart demonstrates the proportion of people who speak Irish according to four provinces in the Republic of Ireland by the survey period from 1981 to 2002.
In general, it is obvious that there was a similar pattern in each province, which rose slightly until 1991, dramatically increasing in 1996 and a smaller growth again in 2002. Besides, it is also noted that Leinster was the only area to register a fall between 1981 and 1986.
In 1981, Connacht had the highest ratio of individuals speaking Irish with roughly 35% to 40%, whereas the second position was about 5% lower with 35%. Additionally, the figures for State and Ulster shared the same situation with 30%, closely followed by that of Leinster, which had the most diminutive Irish speakers in the chart with merely 27%.
In the next 17 years, all five countries in the chart witnessed a slight increase before suddenly experiencing a surge from 1991 to 1996. In 2002, the proportion of people who can speak Irish in Connacht still remained the highest position in the list with 47%, only 1% higher than that of Munster, increasing by 10% to 46%. Simultaneously, over 40% was recorded for both the figures of State and Ulster, ranked third. In addition, although the Irish speakers in Leinster experienced a considerable rise from 27% to 37%, still bottomed the chart.
