The given chart gives information about UK immigration, emigration and net migration from 1999 to 2008.
It is clear that both immigration and emigration rose over the given period, while the figure for net migration largely unchanged by 2008 despite two peaks in 2004 and 2007.
By 1999, there were over 450,000 people immigrating to the UK, whereas just under 300,000 resettled down outside Britain. The figure for net migration was much lower than those figures, at about 160,000 and it remained stable before reaching the first peak of nearly 250,000 in 2004. Over the same period, immigration and emigration shared a roughly similar trend, with the numbers of the former rising to nearly 600,000 and of the latter up to approximately 380,000.
After 2004, the rate of immigration remained above 550,000 people each year; meanwhile, the number of those emigrating fluctuated. Emigration fell suddenly in 2007 and then culminated in a high of 420,000 by 2008. The net migration witnessed the second spike of around 240,00 before levelling off at the initial 160,000 people mark.
