Essay topics:

The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

The line graph illustrates the number of electrical appliances' owners changed and how much time was spent on doing domestic tasks in one country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is clear that the usage of all three appliances experienced an upward trend over the period shown. The most dramatic change was seen in the refrigerator's use.

In 1920, people seem don't need to use a fridge in their house since it accounted for just nearly 0.1%. However, this figure had an exponential increase to 90% in the next two years before reaching its peak at 100% in 1980 and remaining stable for two years later. Washing machine and vacuum cleaner were highly used in the first year, at 40% and 30% respectively. The proportion of vacuum cleaner then steadily rose to 100% in 2000 and remained unchanged in the last year. In contrast, the one with a higher percentage went up to 70% before slightly dropped to around 64% in 1980 and took up the lowest proportion in 2019 compared to the two remainings, at approximately 72%.

In 1920, citizens spent half of their time doing domestic tasks. Nevertheless, this figure then had a deep fall to 20 hours in 1960 due to the fact that the technological revolution in home has started with the introduction of labour-saving appliances such as washing machine, vacuum cleaner,... The more equipment has been invented, the fewer people do the domestic work since the number of hours per week spent on housework continued to drop, at nearly 11 hours in 2019.
