The charts below show the levels of participation in education and science in developing and industrialised countries in 1980 and 1990.
The three bar charts compare the differences between developing countries and industrialized countries in terms of average years of schooling, the percentage of scientists and technicians and money spending on research and development.
It is obvious that industrialised countries far more surpassed developing countries in the aspects of average schooling years, the proportion of scientists and technicians in population and the investment in research and development between 1980 and 1990. And the gap between developing countries and industrialised countries were broadened dramatically.
Overall, the participation of education and science in industrialized countries went up significantly from 1980 to 1990, evidence could be seen no matter in the average years of schooling, the percentage of scientists and technicians or money used for research and development. While in developing countries, research and development investment shrank to a lower number over the ten years, and no huge improvements occurred in the average years of schooling, these two explain why the number of scientists and technicians per 1000 people is much smaller than that in industrialised countries.
