The charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world.
The six given pie charts illustrate how much water was used for three main purposes in six major parts of the world.
Overall, while most water in North America and Europe is used for industry, the main purpose of using water in other areas is to cater to agriculture. Another key feature is that water consumed for domestic use accounts for the smallest percentage of total water.
Regarding North America and Europe, about a half of water consumption in both areas is for industry, taking up 48% and 53%, respectively. The figure for the remaining areas including South America, South East Asia, Africa and Central Asia are 10%, 12%, 7% and 5%, sequentially. Also, there is approximately 13% and 15% of water used for domestic use in North America and Europe, accordingly. This number for South America is 19%, which is over twice as high as the figure for Africa. Eventually, Central Asia and South East Asia consume the same amount of water at 7%.
In term of using water for irrigation, it is seen that Central Asia, Africa and South East Asia are in the top three areas using water, with 88%, 84% and 81%, respectively. Simultaneously, the proportion of water used for this purpose in South America account for 71%, which is nearly twice as much as that in Europe and North America with 32% and 39% accordingly.
