The column charts illustrate the differences and changes in the proportions of students of both genders getting top grades in examinations provided by five different subjects in 1960 and 2000. Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there were upward trends in most categories; while the performances of men in Arts, Languages and the percentage of women in Maths, Languages that bucked the trend.
In particular, when it comes to Sciences, the graph witnessed a sharp increase from 30%-40% for male students and from 20%-25% for female counterparts in the percentages of students. Similarly, concerning Humanities, the number of students stood at 15% for boys and 22% for girls, then rose by 10% and 13% respectively.
Meanwhile, in terms of Languages, the proportion of male students remained stable at about 37% over the period. However, there was a downward trend from 45% to 40% in the figure. Concerning Maths, the period experienced a considerable growth of 10% from 25% to 35% in the proportion of boys. Otherwise, a decrease from 15% to 10% was underwent in the percentages of girls, which constantly accounted for the lowest numbers. Regarding Arts, the numbers of students started at 30%, 25% for male students and finished at 20%, 27% for female counterparts.
