The pie charts illustrate the percentage of British pupils knowing other languages apart from English at a particular university in England during a period of 10 years, from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, the proportion of British students becoming more interested in other languages besides English increased over the period. Also, Spanish was by far the most popular language at that university in both years.
30% of British students were able to communicate in Spanish, which was double that of French, at 15%, followed by 10% of German-speaking students. In 2010, the proportion of pupils knowing Spanish increased moderately to 35%, while the figure for French went down slightly by 5%. Meanwhile, the percentage of German – fluent students remained unchanged at 10% in two years.
Between 2000 and 2010, the percentage of British pupils who could speak other foreign languages witnessed a small growth by 5%. The year 2010 saw a significant fall in British students speaking their mother tongue to 10%.
