Overall, it is clear that people in the US mainly travelled to commute to and from work in 2009, whereas the primary concern of Americans about their travels was its cost.
According to the bar chart, 49% of the trips made by Americans in 2009 were for commuting. By contrast, only slightly above one twentieth was because of visits to friends or relatives and the social or recreation purpose accounted for just 10%. Besides, the percentage of personal reasons was nearly one fifth, which was 3% more than that of shopping aim.
Looking more closely at the pie chart, the price was the key consideration for 36% of American travellers. Next, approximately one in five US citizens cited safety as their foremost travel concern, while aggressive driving and traffic jam were the main issues for 17% and 14% of the travelling public. Finally, the figures for their concern about access to public transport and space for pedestrians were 6% and 8%, respectively.
