The charts below show the results of a survey of adult education. The first chart shows the reasons why adults decide to study. The pie chart shows how people think the costs of adult education should be shared.

The bar chart compares the motives that drive a sample of adults to study, while the pie chart illustrates how people consider these courses should be subsidized.

Overall, most of the adults surveyed study because they are interested in the course or because they want to gain qualifications. The results of the survey show that people think the taxpayer and employer together should pay more than half of these courses.

Two-fifths of the sample of adults study out of interest on the subject, and a roughly similar percentage do it because they want to get qualifications. In comparison, about one in five adults study since studying helps them improve their performance at work or because it makes their prospects of getting promoted higher. Another fifth of the sample study just out of enjoyment. The figures for those who study because they want to meet new people or change their job are around 10% each.

According to the survey, just over a quarter of the course price should be paid by the taxpayer, while the employer should subsidize one-third, leaving only 40% of the cost to be paid by the adult student.
