The map shows the growth of a village named Chorleywood since the middle of the 19th century.
It is clear that the village grew as the development of the transport facilities. Four periods of village expansion are shown on the map, each of these is near to either main roads, the railway or the motorway.
Between 1868 and 1883, the original Chorleywood village was located next to one of the main roads, which was also near the nowaday Chorleywood park and Gold course. During the next 39 years, the village expanded along the main road to the south, and in 1909, a railway line was built across this place from west to east. The development also brought the Chorleywood station into the center of the village.
Chorleywood continued to expanded to the east and west alongside the railway until 1970 and at that moment, a motorway was built to the east of the village. From 1970 to 1994, further development of the village took place around motorway intersections with one of the main roads and the railway.
