The flowchart illustrates the life-cycle of a fish species named salmons. Overall, there are 3 stages revolving around the lifespan of a salmon, which spans to approximately 10 years.
Salmons start off as eggs, laid on stony riverbeds of a slow river, underneath long aquatic plants known as reeds. This lasts for 5-6 months, until the eggs hatch into a 3-6 centimeter long larvae called ‘fry’. A fry lives roughly 4 years on a faster flowing region of a river.
After the next 5 years, they are known as ‘smolt’, which comparing to a fry is 9 centimeters longer. They then move into the open sea, and spends 5 years of their lives there. As time progresses, they are termed as an ‘adult salmon’, where they increase significantly to about 76 centimeters in length. As they reach maturity, they return to their birthplace, so they cal lay eggs and restart the cycle.
In conclusion, the salmon metamorphisizes into 3 different stages in their lifetime. It can be said that, each stage of development occurs in different aquatic environments.
