The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The following diagram illustrates various phases of producing electricity by a hydroelectric power station.
As can be clearly observed from the diagram, gaining electricity from hydroelectric power stations consists of many different stages. First of all, a dam which is constructed across a river, gathers water at the backside as a high-level reservoir. There is an intake beneath the dam, while the intake is open during day, it is close at nights. The second step includes a relatively long pipe. The pipe guides flow of water to a power station at days and waterflow is reversed during nights by pumping through the pipe.
The next step is about a power station. It contains a generator and reversible turbines and via another smaller pipe connects to low-level reservoir. Unlike nights which turbines pumps water into high-level reservoir, they operate the generator during day time. As turbines pushes water into low-level reservoir during day, electricity is produced by generator. Then, produced electricity is distributed into power lines. Finally, electricity power is delivered to national grid to consume.
It is clear from the diagram that electricity power which is gained through this process is not only a clean energy, but also the reservoirs can play a significant role as water resources regarding agricultural purposes.
