The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

The diagram illustrates stages to generate the electricity from water in a hydroelectric power station.
It is clear that there are various stages to create electricity from the flow of river that shown on the diagram. We also see that there are two reservoirs to control the flow of water and generators used in this process.
At the first place, a dam is built in suitable places that are usually in high areas to take advantage of geography. Water from river will be stored in high-level reservoir. In day time, the flow of water from above reservoir run down to turbines of hydroelectric power station to generate electricity. Power lines are used to connect with national grid.
At night, water from low-level reservoir will be pumped into high-level one to start a new cycle. A dam plays a role in regulate the flow of water with two mode, open in day and close at night.
