The figure illustrates the main varieties of writing systems used all around the world.
It is clear that there are five main types of writing systems adopted by most countries in the world. Characters in different systems are created in different ways accordingly.
The first is logograohic system where one character means one word. Chinese is a representative of this writing system. It is noticeable that same writing system can be used by languages even if they are different in spoken form. For example, both Chinese and Japanese use logographic system while Syllabic system is used in Japanese as well. This writing systems feature one syllable forms one character. Kana is another instance of syllabic system.
The other three systems are related to pronunciation. In alphabetic system, one character corresponds to one vowel or constant sound. English belongs to this system. It should be noted that exact match of spelling and pronunciation is not always possible. In contrast, only one consonant sound matches one character in abjad system and one character go with one consonant and one vowel sound in abjuda system. Abrabic is behalf of the former and Indian and Devanagari are examples of the latter. Particularly, the first type of sound-based writing system is abjad.
