The diagrams below show the development of the horse over a period of 40 million years.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisions where relevant.
The diagrams illustrate the evolutionary timeline of the horse, with detailed examination of its foot anatomy.Overall, it is clear that over the course of 40 million years, horses have gained new physical features, including the development from its feet to modern hooves.
In terms of size, the modern horse is notably larger and more muscular than its ancestors, sporting a more voluminous tail at the end and a mane along its back.
The most striking transformation, however, is seen in the foot structure. 40 million years ago, Eohippus used to walk on four-toed feet. These were reduced to 3 toes with the frontal bone outgrowing the two on the sides as shown by the Mesohippus after 10 million years. Another 15 million years further accentuated the size gap as Merychippus came into existence. Ultimately, modern horses' legs have totally been transformed, with each leg comprising only their much larger singular bone and hoof.
