The diagrams illustrate the process of how a salmon egg grows up into an adult salmon.
Overall, a salmon goes through 3 stages throughout its life before turning into a fully grown salmon. And the process is cyclic as an adult salmon lay eggs and those eggs turn into a grown salmon which in turn lay eggs again.
First of all, Salmon eggs can be mainly found in the upper river inside the reeds under the small stones as the stream of upper river is slow moving. Salmon eggs stay there for approximately 5 to 6 months. After 5/6 months, the eggs hatch into small fish of 3 to 8 cm called ‘fry’. These fry fishes move down to a lower river which is comparatively fast moving than upper river.
After approximately 4 years, the fry fish gradually grows into a slightly larger fish (12-15 cm) called ‘smolt’. Smolt fishes move from lower river to the open sea and stay there for approximately 5 years. The smolts then evolve into a fully grown adult salmon which is almost 5 times the size of a smolt. An adult salmon starts to lay eggs in the upper river which continues the life cycle for another generation.
