The diagrams below show the water supply system in Australia at present and in future.
The diagrams show how the water supply system works in Australia at present and a proposed design for the system in the future.
It is clear that the main changes will happen at the water treatment stage. Besides, the river will no longer be a part of the system in the future.
Currently, dam and storage are the prime sources of pure water in the city and this will remain unchanged in the future system. Waste water, which is the pure water after being used in households, plants and shops, will pass into a water treatment plant in both two systems. However, instead of not processing the waste water and passing it directly into the nearby river, in the future, this type of waste will be recycled into pure water and sent back to the city for consumption.
It can be seen that storm water will receive the same treatment as polluted water in the second diagram, going into the water treatment plant and being recycled before flowing back to the city as pure water. However, water collected from storms in the present system is expected to be travel into the river.
