The diagrams show the cross-sections of two tunnels, one joining France and Italy and
the other joining two Japanese islands.
The figures illustrate the two tunnels’ cross-sections. While figure 1 demonstrates the road tunnel which connects France and Italy together, called the Mont-Blanc, the other describle the railway tunnel linking two islands of the japanese, namely seikan tunnel.
Generally, seikan railway tunnel is longer than the Mont-Blanc road tunnel, and it also took a longer time to construct than the road tunnel.
Particularly, seikan railway, the one joining japanese’s Hokkaido island and the japanese island is 53.85 kilometers long. it was built under the Tsugaru Strait sea with the depth of 240 meters in 42 years from 1946 to 1988. Whereas the Mont-Blanc road tunnel was started to built later in 1957. The construction took only eight years to finished, means that it has being used 34 earlier than the seikan railway. Construting 3.5 kilometers depth under the ground, the Mont-Blanc tunnel’s length is 11,60 kilometers which is shorter, but deeper than the seikan tunnel.
