The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross-section of 100,000 people asking if they travelled abroad and why they travelled for the period 1994-98. The second chart shows their destinations over the same period.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
The first table compares the purposes of visits overseas of the UK citizens between the period of four years from 1994 to 1998. The second table demonstrates the parts of the world to which British people travelled during the same period.
To begin with, as is observed from the first chart, there were four major reasons of visits, namely holiday, business, visits to friends and relatives and other purposes. The striking feature is that the biggest proportion of surveyed people had holiday abroad, 15246 out os 100000 in 1994 and 20700 in 1998. Whereas in the sector of business, the number of people increased steadily over the period, hitting the peak of 3957 in 1998. The same situation was observed in the visits to friend and relatives category. However, the number of the UK residents travelling overseas for other reasons was erratic, hitting 990 in 1998, which was slightly more than 982 in 1994.
Concerning the second table, a vast majority of British population tavelled to Western Europe. These numbers rose during the period with some downward trend in 1995. The highest proportion of people who visited Western Europe was in 1998, 24519 out of 100000 in comparison with 1823 in North America. The number of North America visitors was comparatively less than that of Western Europe visitors.
To sum up, the amount of visits overseas of various reasons increased considerably from 1994 to 1998. And the most common purpose of travel among surveyed people was holiday and Western Europe countries were highly visited by the UK residents.
